April 1, 2020 "Distancing" can bring us closer

In these days of dealing with COVID-19 we hear about "social distancing".  But I heard someone recently say they wished we would call it "physical distancing".  Their thought was that it might drive home the point of keeping extra distance between people so as to minimize the spread of a highly contagious virus.

I'm thinking this morning that I prefer the term "physical" distancing because we can and need to continue to be social.  Its just through phone or facebook, blogs, texts and emails, cards and prayers.  We just have to be a little more intentional and thoughtful about it, which makes it more meaningful.  So that is one way "distancing" can bring us closer.

Another is in our relationship to the Lord.  You don't know how much you miss something until you don't have it!  Like a church service, or a simple Bible Study together.  But we don't have to let it distance us from God's presence.  He is Jehovah Shammah, which means "the Lord is Present".

As I read Psalm 71 this morning I thought about how many times David had to flee from King Saul.  I thought about the many times the Psalmist felt disconnected and alone, facing enemies and fears.  But the Psalmist always comes back around to the deep conviction that God was there for him.  And sometimes in the silences God was closer than ever, and all of the sudden would fill his heart with praise even in challenging circumstances.

Practice "physical" distancing and let's get this thing behind us, God being our helper.  But let' s not practice "social" distancing.  In fact let's use the means available to us as a springboard to draw closer than ever, to each other and to Jehovah Shammah.
